The Black Resilience Network would like to amplify that the record has been set straight about FEMA Deputy Administrator Erik Hooks. Some media outlets reposted a satirical article suggesting that he had been detained by the U.S. military and other outrageous claims. People then shared this fiction about Deputy Administrator Hooks across social media platforms. Mischaracterizations like this are dangerous because they feed into negative racial stereotypes that can have particularly dire consequences for Black professionals. Fortunately, in this instance, FEMA and many reputable online publications have since reported that the story is completely false. It is important to make timely public corrections of misrepresentations to preserve people’s dignity and hard-earned reputation.
