Dealing with Misinformation
Our friends at the Public Health Communicators Collaborative have created a very helpful on-line guide to misinformation, and we encourage you to download it and take advantage of its very helpful advice.
As the collaborative said in announcing the guide, “Building continued trust in public health requires us to learn how to identify false narratives and respond with clarity, accurate information, and accessible language.”
And this is a great way to do that!
The Public Health Communicators Guide to Misinformation, developed by the Collaborative in partnership with the Infodemiology Training Program, provides insights into the current misinformation landscape and tools to assess risk and determine how to respond.
In response to a directive from the Florida Department of Health (shamefully we might add) advising against the use of updated mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, contradicting CDC guidance, they write, Use our updated talking points to counteract misleading and false claims about mRNA vaccine safety:
- There are two types of approved 2024-25 COVID-19 vaccines: mRNA-based and protein subunit-based. Both vaccine types are safe and protect against serious illness, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19.
- The CDC advises that everyone age 6 months and older get an updated COVID-19 vaccine. The FDA has approved mRNA vaccines from Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech for ages 6 months and older, and the non-mRNA vaccine from Novavax for people ages 12 years and older.
- Vaccination is the safest way to gain protection from COVID-19 because the risk of side effects from a vaccine is much lower than the risk of serious illness after infection.
It’s well worth taking time to read the guide and use it in our daily work to protect the health of our residents.
